Still partially wrapt in mystery, but here is potentially the first SS DSET:http://www.firstwatt.com/sit1.htmlI say potentially for that is not naturally Pass's direction, but each monobloc is designed to be tunable to its specific speaker....
I suppose the key question in this situation is this: if you are going to have a single amplifier is the advantage of any departure from a SET topology ever likely to compensate for its shortcomings? If the answer is by and large no, as it seems to m...
Paul, you might want to take a look at the parallel GM-70 amps here:http://www.sacthailand.com/You can get 5 of them for the price of a used ML2, and, well, it is a high power SET....
Hi Paul, Many thanks for your comments. Surely, AC modulation merely injects 50Hz noise + harmonics thereto, on top of other noise. Even if some kind of perturbation of the power is beneficial for whatever reason it would be very odd for it to be pec...
Yes, the parts are still available, decoudm@gmail.com for further details. The Melquiades is nearly finished, my builder tells me, but I don't yet have an eta: will report when I have it....
Does it not make sense, for the amplifiers at least, to source the power directly from the DC of the PP3000? For how can there be value in recreating the AC, only to rectify it again? Any processing step will add noise, and here that step is redundan...
I can see objections to using paralleled tubes to achieve higher power where the channel has a single driver, but surely where you have multiple drivers differences between the drivers themselves would render any disadvantage of using (say) one tube ...
Oh sure, it is no guarantee of anything, but a priori would seem a larger step than many of the preceding. Though of course it is worrying to read about changes made in response to "listening tests" without any indication of who the listeners were an...

The new Oppo uses the ESS Sabre32 DAC chip, which seems to maintain fidelity in the face of much higher jitter compared with others...or at least so the comparison above shows....so it might be able to achieve decent performance with a relatively poo...
Oddly it might be the DAC section for which an Oppo player, though a later one, might be worth trying. If this...http://www.esstech.com/PDF/es9008%20dac%20comparison_SPDIF_96000_compA_compb.pdf...is to be believed then the sound of the thing ought to...

The aim was to try to reproduce opera in a room, which conventional speakers seem to do so implausibly, at least the few I have been exposed to. Why the SH50 gets closer than the others I do not know: perhaps it is coherence across the frequency rang...
For what it is worth, unless you are irradiating a concert hall, the SH50 is perfectly adequately driven by a 15W single 845-based SET, and I will shortly find out what it sounds like with a full range Melq. ...

Yes, I think we are all agreed that flux demodulation is not the issue here, and that simulating different permanent magnet materials statically may be interesting but is unlikely to be revolutionary. But if FCs have a unique advantage it has to be t...
If a magnetic field is static, who cares how it is created? Isn't the main potential advantage of electromagnets one that no one has explored at all - the possibility of modulating the field strength in direct response to the audio signal? So, on...

I use these...http://cgi.ebay.com/RECORDING-STUDIO-NO-NOISE-DUAL-VARIAC-LIGHTING-DIMMER-/110477881627?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19b8feb11b...though you cannot easily put them in a wall owing to the depth. If you can, they work perfectly....
You would not ask a carpenter for an opinion on the merits and demerits of a Stradivarius, yet those who comment on playback only seem to care about technicalities (though, tellingly, not the technicalities of auditory psychophysics). The sad reality...
That is very interesting, but surely to know what it means we need to compare the variance both within and across bad and good days. There is bound to be variation from one recording to the next on a good day, and this may be as great as that between...
I shall try it; do you suggest it as a test of whether or not mating the Milq with the SH50 screws up the sound irredeemably anyway? Rgds, d...

A very attractive halogen solution is the Osram Ministar, e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/OSRAM-MINISTAR%C2%AE-MIT-AXIAL-REFLECTOR-20W/dp/B000WL29AQIt is a low voltage miniature halogen capsule light with a built-in reflector, so easily added to a magni...

The dimensions I gave you uniquely identify which of the cases in the list I used; I told you the meter was not for sale but helpfully suggested the brand if you want to buy the same or similar; the transformers, chokes etc are as specified in Romy's...
I sent you a link to the comprehensive technical description of the two components of each case. To read a link you have to click on it, if it does not work for you copy and paste into a browser. I am sorry, I had no idea you needed help at that ...
Mate, I gave you a list of exactly what is for sale. You persist with childishly obsessional and paranoid questioning, bizarrely on here rather than direct to me, as if anyone gives a fig why exactly I have a spare set of components. It is alright, y...
Rakesh, I really don't understand the need to pollute this thread with trivia. This is not a sales board. Anyone seriously interested in what is on offer here can contact me directly for details. I am not a salesman, I don't care to persuade anyone t...
Yes, I was concerned about that too; the nature of the synergy horn design apparently requires unusual drivers (e.g. very large excursion for the LF), but they are fine with the 845-based SET I am using at the moment. I suppose we shall have to see....
Romy, apologies for being unclear: the amp is not yet built: this is just a spare chassis I am offering for others who may wish to build it too. Inputs and outputs have not yet been added to the chassis. I therefore cannot comment on the sound yet bu...
Hi Rakesh,No, I have not abandoned the project: these are simply surplus to requirements owing to the way in which I will procure the thing ultimately. There is no difficulty in sourcing parts - suitable transformer makers have been mentioned here al...
For anyone interested in building a full range Melquiades I have a spare set of drilled aluminium cases, output and power transformers, offered at below cost. Apologies for sub-optimal photography. Please contact for more details.Regards, d ...

I thought of filling with sand braided multifilament nylon cable sleeving (http://cableorganizer.com/nylon-multifilament/) which comes in 2 inch diameter and does not expand enough to allow coarse sand to come out. It can be wrapped around as densely...

It is true, Romy, that the Macondo is not *just* a set of horns and drivers, but nonetheless it *is* a set of horns and driver without which it is impossible to give body to the ideas that you talk about. Someone who has not heard the S2, for example...
I should point out that my experience might not be representative because my horn is wrapped in 1 and 1/2 inch diameter manila rope and then doused in high density plaster, so it weights about 50kg or so. A simpler solution might be their "ultrafi" v...
